We Are Wired for Email Flames
On edge.org's The World Question Center, DANIEL GOLEMAN, Psychologist; Author, Emotional Intelligence, explains Cyber-disinhibition -- the reason that the way our brains work leads us into flame wars in online conversations.
Without all the visual cues we get from in-person conversation, we misunderstand online meanings and experience negative emotions. In a state of negative-emotions some of our natural inhibitors fail us, impulse takes over, and we lash out.
This article is a response to the question: What is your most dangerous idea?
Goleman adds:
"As with any new technology, the Internet is an experiment in progress. It's time we considered what other such downsides of cyber-disinhibition may be emerging — and looked for a technological fix, if possible. The dangerous thought: the Internet may harbor social perils our inhibitory circuitry was not designed to handle in evolution."
